    yields-- time-- difficultymoderate

    • 4 large baking apples,
    • 2/3 tablespoons of butter,
    • 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar,
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon,
    • 4/6 tablespoons apple juice or cider, whipped cream for serving.

    1. Quarter, peel and core the apples, and slice them thinly.
    2. Butter a baking dish that will hold them comfortably.
    3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar and cinnamon to taste. Transfer them to the baking dish and moisten with apple juice or cider.
    4. Dot the top with small flakes of butter. Bake the apples in a preheated 375 F. oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until they are a rich golden color on top and feel soft when pierced with a fork or skewer.
    5. Serve hot or warm, with a bowl of chilled, slightly sweetened whipped cream.
