One of the kids who tested this recipe wanted to know if we would get to make French toast out of actual gingerbread. That does sound good, but if we soaked gingerbread in the batter it would turn to mush and you'd have a big mess instead of breakfast. To make something just as delicious, we add gingerbread spices (cinnamon, ginger, and allspice) to the batter. Then we put in some bread to soak up all the flavor. It's almost like having dessert for breakfast!

  RECIPE INGREDIENTS

1 loaf (10 ounces) French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (10 cups)
8 eggs
3 cups milk
4 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 teaspoon salt, optional

For the Topping:
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, cubed
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Maple syrup, optional
